Works of the month of November
In much of the peninsula, autumn has now arrived, with foggy days in the lowlands and even the first snows in the mountains; some more fortunate regions can enjoy, at least in the central hours of the day, short periods of heat. The climate, however, is that of autumn, the nocturnal tensions have dropped and the days have definitely shortened. In the garden most of the annuals have finished the blooms, or are now running out, and the plants are losing their leaves, often assuming reddish or orange colors, which herald the winter. In this period of the year in any case, the work is in full swing in the garden, to prepare the soil and the plants for the rest of the cold months; as far as indoor plants are concerned, instead, they will all have already found their place in the house, we will only have to pay attention to the water needs.
During the winter period many plants have a period of vegetative rest, during which their water and nutritional needs decrease considerably; this happens also for houseplants, even if they are kept at quite high temperatures, the short days cause a reduced vegetative development. Let's water our plants sporadically, only in the case of very dry soil, and avoid providing fertilizer. The main enemy of our plants is in this period the domestic heating, which dries the air: let's remember to vaporize the leaves every week, using demineralized water. If an air conditioning system is installed in our apartment, it is advisable to also activate an environmental humidifier; if, on the other hand, we have a floor heating system, remember to always keep the pots raised to prevent the heat from the pipes from causing serious damage to the root systems of our plants.Flowering plants
Poinsettias and kalanchoes are indoor plants that bloom in winter, when the days are short; to favor the flowering of these plants at Christmas time it is necessary to keep them in complete darkness for most of the day, at least 16-18 hours. It is already time to force the bulbs for home flowering, place them in a dry and warm place, so that they start producing the leaves again, as if it were spring.
If we want to propagate our favorite plants we can begin to take semi-woody cuttings, to be rooted in a mixture of peat and sand in equal parts; It is good to keep the containers with the cuttings in a well-ventilated, warm and humid place. November is the month of cyclamens; remember that most of these plants need cool but mild temperatures, it would be ideal to keep them outside during the day and at home during the night; water regularly, letting the soil dry slightly between one watering and another.
Work on the terrace and balcony
In this month when the cold begins to be felt, it is necessary to set up effective barriers to protect the plants placed outside on balconies and terraces.
It may be useful for this purpose to use trellises or plastic sheets, which can be purchased in specialized shops or even in some supermarkets, with which to create small sheltered areas; or we can use non-woven fabric, which allows for greater transpiration and does not prevent rain from wetting the plants ...
You can also create small iron or wooden structures or buy mini plastic greenhouses that are easily available on the market.
Work of the month apartment November: Succulent in November
During one of the coldest periods of the year, November, let's try to grow our succulent plants in a sunny place, or in any case very bright. We avoid watering, watering the specimens grown at home only sporadically. The fertilizations are not necessary, we will resume with the fertilizer in late spring.
