Setting up a greenhouse to produce your vegetables even in the bad season not only offers the advantage of making them available for consumption all year round, but also of providing the possibility to sow in advance those varieties that, once they have sprouted , they can be transplanted to full ground when the outdoor climate becomes steadily mild.
However, if you want to get the best out of your vegetables produced in greenhouses, you must take into account, whatever their type, a factor prior to installation, given that it can also involve a considerable economic outlay that could not be adequately repaid with a sufficient production.
This factor is exposure to sunlight that your greenhouse should benefit from, which should be as direct as possible so that the plants receive adequate brightness and sufficient heat. Once the ideal location has been chosen, and in the preparation of the same, it is then necessary to guarantee a good thermal insulation so as to avoid dispersions that could be highly harmful for the vegetative development of the plants, to which it is advisable to also provide an adequate cultivation space avoiding excessive approximations, so that they do not compete with each other with respect to the absorption of the nutrients contained in the soil.
Finally, it is essential to supply the vegetables grown in the greenhouse with the water they need even in the winter season, at a time when their water requirements are noticeably reduced. To prevent them from experiencing a thermal shock with the possibility of stopping their growth, the best solution is to place a series of containers inside it where the water can naturally heat up in the greenhouse environment and then be used for its purpose.

Tunnel greenhouses



The "tunnel" garden greenhouse is generally the most economical and practical model, because it can be easily dismantled, of all the greenhouses available today. It consists of a structure of plastic or metal arches, to be solidly planted on the ground and possibly consolidated with special pegs. On this structure a transparent sheet of synthetic material is placed, which can be more or less resistant or reinforced to offer protection to the greenhouse even in case of strong wind.
With the arrival of warm weather, the tunnel greenhouse can be dismantled and, after careful cleaning of the elements of the same, stored in a small space. Possibly it can be kept assembled and used, after replacing the plastic sheet with a shading net, to carry out sowing and cuttings during the summer period, away from the strong solar radiation of our latitudes.

Fixed greenhouses



Unlike the "tunnel" greenhouse the fixed greenhouse is the solution for those who prefer to opt for a permanent structure and can have a suitable space for installation, to which it may be necessary to obtain a specific authorization. The fixed greenhouse for vegetable garden consists of a supporting structure that can be made of various materials such as plastic, wood, iron or aluminum and whose preference for one compared to the others depends not only on our aesthetic taste, but also on the availability to make the necessary maintenance interventions that some of them could require and from the budget that we expect to invest. The cover can instead be made of simple glass panels, raw or worked or of plastic material such as plexiglas; these panels are then fixed to the supporting structure by means of appropriate metal joints. Finally, to ensure the necessary thermal insulation, it is essential to insulate the greenhouse from the outside using transparent bubble polyethylene sheets, which must be fixed in horizontal strips starting from the highest part and so that air pockets form between the sheets themselves and the underlying material, without however sealing the openings.

Vegetable garden: Typologies of greenhouses



There are two types of fixed greenhouses, the one called "two-pitched" or small house, which offers greater brightness but considerable thermal dispersion and possible structural instability in the event of strong winds, and that of a "pitch", that is leaning against a wall already existing, which reduces heat losses and indirectly saves on heating costs, should you wish to install it. Whatever the type selected, it is always necessary to ensure the greenhouse a valid system of openings; this is because at certain times the heat inside it can be very high, making it necessary to cool the environment while in others the conditions favorable to the formation of condensation can at the same time cause fungal diseases that are difficult to fight in the plants.
