Shrub Peonies have well branched woody stems, they can reach up to 2 meters in height. In winter the stems remain bare of their foliage as they enter the season of vegetative rest. The most sought after flowers of this species are usually yellow or white ones but there are also red and pink ones. The dark green leaves are large and serrated, the dark brown branches are gnarled and twisted and have a very delicate thin bark, in fact often cracks are created and the stems are peeled. The ideal soil for this species must be rich, light and well drained, but above all slightly acidic. They are vigorous and strong, they do not fear periods of frost and drought, in this case if prolonged it is advisable to water them to keep the soil cool. After the complete flowering it is advisable to remove the withered flowers and shorten the old, damaged or broken branches, do not prune excessively, otherwise in the following season they will not produce their beautiful flowers.HERBACEOUS PEONIES
The herbaceous peonies are cultivated throughout Europe and there are different kinds of them. They have a large tuberous root that in the spring period creates long stems, where they develop large jagged leaves of a brilliant green, forming round tufts that can reach heights and widths of up to 1 meter. In spring and summer, thin erect stems have large buds, which will later become beautiful colored flowers, usually in shades of pink. The herbaceous peonies can have simple flowers, double, stradoppi and their colors range from the shades of red to pink, white and Burgundy.
Their cultivation is very simple. In fact, even if they are not well cared for, they can grow showing themselves in the hottest season in all their beauty, surely if they are planted in a soft, fertile and well-worked soil, mixed with little sand and mature manure and free of weeds, the results will be better. It is preferable to have regular watering especially in the period of vegetation that goes from April to September, to leave the soil always fresh, but they also live in very dry environments. In spring, when the foliage tends to develop, it is advisable to fertilize the plants with mature manure or chemical or biological fertilizer, in slow-absorbing granules, specific for flowering plants. It is advisable to fix the braces in the center of the head of leaves, to prevent the stems from bending due to the heaviness and size of the flower, to finally eliminate the dried flowers. Towards the end of the summer it is possible to prune the leaves of the Peonies at 20 cm from the ground, so that in the next flowering, they will be ready to give their splendor again.
Peony flowers: INTERSECTIONAL PEONIES
Intersectional peonies have the same characteristics as shrub and herbaceous ones. The only difference is that in winter they dry up completely, but in the following season they recover with woody stems and branched branches. The flowers are large scented with shades ranging from the bright yellow to the candid pink and the bright red. The land where to grow them must be light and rich in nutrients.
