Carrots are one of the most common vegetable crops among summer residents. It is appreciated for its taste and richness with vitamins. Gardeners prepare very carefully for planting this root crop. And many, just like beginners, ask themselves the question every year: After how many days do carrots sprout?

In order for the expectations to pass calmly, it is important to know the timing of the seedlings and the conditions that affect them. The term of germination is understood as a certain amount of time elapsed from sowing seeds in the ground to the formation of the first shoots. It depends on many factors, taking into account which, every gardener will be able to predict the appearance of sprouts in his garden.

Timing: how long after sowing do the first shoots appear?

The long wait depends on the fact that the seeds are in a shell of essential oilsthat do not give moisture to the embryo. Such unprepared seeds, planted at the usual time (April / May), hatch in 25-30 days.

If you prepare the planting material (wash the essential oils, germinate the seeds in advance), then the appearance of the sprout will please in 7-11 days. Thus, the ripening period is halved.

What do they look like in the photo when they sprout?

How to quickly increase germination: what factors affect this?

Observing certain conditions, one can not only assume the day of emergence of seedlings, but also be sure of a high-quality harvest.

Planting depth in open ground

  1. Before sowing, the soil is loosened on the prepared ridge, so it will be easier for the seeds to take root, the access of oxygen will become freer, and the roots will be even.
  2. Further, grooves are formed about 2 cm deep, in the row spacing from 10 to 15 cm.
  3. Then the rows are spilled with warm water and sprinkled with ash or chalk as fertilizer.
  4. After that, the seeds are evenly distributed at a distance of 2-5 cm from each other and lightly sprinkled with earth, dry humus or sand.
  5. You can also cover the top with a film. It will retain moisture, and the planted material will protect against weathering and heavy rain. And the greenhouse effect will promote faster germination.

Gardeners do not recommend planting deeper, since this, together with the formed crust of earth, will become a difficult obstacle to sprouts. And sowing on the very surface of the soil is fraught with the knocking out of the planted seeds with rain.

The usual planting dates for summer residents are the end of April - beginning of May. Seedlings of the orange beauty, sown during this period, will appear only after 25-30 days. The soil is already warmed up and sufficiently moist, but the still unstable cool air temperature will affect the prolonged germination of seeds.

May is considered the "golden mean". Both the bright sun and warm soil will be favorable for seedlings. Sowing carrots in May will sprout faster. It will take 15-20 days to wait. Planting in June will be considered a late sowing, but the most favorable for seedling formation. Stable warm weather around the clock, long daylight hours will allow the seeds to hatch in 7-10 days.

If you select a later variety suitable for your climate for sowing during this period, follow all the recommendations of agricultural technology, then by mid-October you will get an excellent harvest that will be well stored in the winter.

Seed quality

It is recommended to choose the carrot seeds from the previous harvest year, they are characterized by high germination. Also, at home, you can determine the quality of the seed. To do this, you need to soak the seeds in water for several hours. As a result, remove the barren flowers, which will float to the surface, and dry the suitable seeds well before planting.

You also need to pay attention to the color and smell of the planting material. If it is a viable material, then the seeds smell very strong, due to the large amount of essential oils, and have a smooth, convex surface. Wrinkled seeds with spots should be discarded.

Soil type

Carrots love loose, fertile, sandy loam soilswhere it will rise twice as fast as in heavy and scarce lands. Humus, peat, mineral fertilizers, and ash are also favorable for it. But fresh organic matter should not be added before planting.

Better to plant on ridges that were fertilized with manure two years ago.

There should be no stagnant groundwater near the carrot bed, this can affect the germination and further rotting of root crops. In nutritious and loose soil, they will grow juicy and even.

Carrot variety

The variety of the orange beauty must be selected in accordance with the climatic region, which will have a beneficial effect on the germination, quantity and quality of carrots. For eating fresh vegetables, making juices, you should choose early ripening varieties. But they won't be stored in the winter.

To harvest a juicy and strong harvest in the fall, you should pay attention to the later ripeness varieties. They have a sweeter taste and good storage until the next season.

A place

The bed must be prepared in the fall, by digging deep into the bayonet of a shovel. This is done so that the soil is saturated with oxygen and is ready for frost. In the spring, the earth needs to be loosened, weeds removed.

The place for growing carrots is chosen even, sunny, without stagnant groundwater... The orange beauty is very light-requiring. If it is planted in the shade, then the roots will grow small. You should also focus on what vegetable crops grew in this place last season. The ideal precursors for carrots are cucumbers, onions, cabbage, potatoes.

Standard sowing dates begin in April-May, when the soil temperature warms up to + 8ͦС, and the air temperature - up to + 10-12ͦС. Under these conditions, the seeds hatch slowly, 25-30 days. You can speed up the process if the crops are covered with foil. It will also save you from rains that can knock out freshly sown seeds.

At an air temperature warmed up to 15ͦС, friendly shoots will appear in 12-14 days... As a rule, these days are sunny and dry. Therefore, carrot beds require additional watering. But it is worth remembering that waterlogging is dangerous by rotting. Therefore, everything is in moderation.

Errors due to which sprouts do not appear for a long time

  1. Poor quality or expired seeds were found.
  2. The landing site is the same as last year. It should change every year, since the soil there is already scarce, it needs to be fertilized.
  3. Sowing was carried out in newly fertilized soil.
  4. Planting too deep or close to the ground.
  5. Excess or lack of moisture.

Reading a large number of recommendations for planting such a healthy vegetable as carrots, it seems that it is not possible to grow them juicy, even, on time and in the right amount. But in reality, it is not that difficult. Fulfilling the conditions now step by step, then you will do it automatically. And your work will be rewarded annually with an excellent harvest.
