Houseplants of ivy geraniums are somewhat different from those that grow in natural conditions - the leaf plates of the former are more delicate and thin, and the stems fall in cascades. Unlike other varieties of the plant, ampelous has smooth dark green leaves without felt hairs. The width reaches 5-6 centimeters.

The flowers of the plant are cactus-shaped or star-shapedcollected in umbellate inflorescences. They differ in their small size and a variety of shades.

Where and how to plant a flower?

It is best to choose a place where the sun's rays will be the maximum time. During the winter months it is necessary to provide the plant with additional lighting.

Important! Bright light is essential for the normal growth and development of ivy geraniums.

Ivy geranium is not demanding on mail - it should be loose, moisture-absorbing and nutritious soil, it is allowed to add a small amount of clay. The most common composition of the substrate can be used. To do this, mix in equal parts:

  • sand;
  • leafy ground;
  • peat;
  • and sod.

It is worth taking care of the drainage - the plant does not like stagnant moisture... Expanded clay is suitable for this.

To make geranium inflorescences more lush, in the spring-autumn period, you can feed the plant with potash and phosphorus mixtures.

Planting at home can be done in spring or early fall. Indoor plants of ampelous geraniums feel comfortable in:

  • small pots;
  • hanging baskets;
  • flowerpots;
  • and balcony boxes.

It is important to take into account that the distance between the roots of the plant and the walls of the pot should not be more than 2 cm. Seedlings for outdoor cultivation are planted in the spring in a box at a distance of 10-15 cm from each other.

You can put plants outside at the end of the spring frost.... The optimum room temperature in summer is between 20 ° C and 25 ° C, and in winter it should not drop below 15 ° C.

In a hotter period, it is necessary to increase the watering of the plant. At normal times, it is recommended to water the plant as the soil dries out.

Important! Subzero temperatures are detrimental to ivy geraniums.

Top dressing is carried out from early spring to late summer - during the flowering period. For this, mineral supplements and organic fertilizers are suitable. At the beginning of spring, it is recommended to prune the bare stems and pinch the shoots. - this will make the geranium fluffier and cause it to branch.

Features of care and reproduction

Ampel geranium reproduces in two ways:

  1. seeds;
  2. by cuttings.

Seed propagation

For this method, it is important to choose quality seeds from manufacturers. You can try using seeds taken during the flowering of geraniums, but in this case there is a great chance that the plants will differ in appearance from the mother plants. Difficulties can also arise with hybrid plants.

When propagated by seeds, ivy geraniums can be quite capricious.... Seeds are usually planted in the soil in December. In winter, the seedlings should be provided with adequate lighting. For planting, a standard potting mix of:

  • sand;
  • peat;
  • turf;
  • deciduous land.

Seeds are planted 3-5 mm, covered with a film and germinate at a temperature not lower than 22 ° C. If all conditions are met, the seeds should sprout within 7-10 days.... Later, the germinated seeds are transplanted into separate containers.

Cuttings

This type of reproduction is recommended in early autumn, when pruning plants. Spring is also suitable, provided that the plants have had time to grow well and give shoots suitable for further breeding.

The length of the shoot should be at least 7 cm and not exceed 12 cm. The trumpet geranium can be planted in the soil 2-5 hours after grafting. This time is necessary for the plant to dry out and the formation of a special film on the cut that prevents rotting. Rooting occurs without germination in the aquatic environmentotherwise the plant may rot.

After drying, it is important to sprinkle the cut with charcoal or activated charcoal. This is necessary for antiseptic treatment. After that, you can plant geraniums in boxes. After the appearance of new leaves, the seedling must be pinched to make it more lush.

Knowing these simple rules, you can easily propagate the ampelous geranium yourself.

Is it possible to grow not only at home, but also outdoors?

Separately, it should be said about the cultivation of geraniums on the street. In order for the plant to grow not at home, but in outdoor conditions, it must be prepared. To do this, in the spring, containers with flowers begin to gradually expose to the street for a while, while avoiding freezing temperatures. After freezing, geraniums can be exposed outside for the summer.

Closer to autumn, when the temperature starts to drop below 10 ° C, it is recommended to take geraniums indoors. At the same time, special conditions are created for them - a bright and cool place, the temperature of the content is 7-10 ° C, as well as a reduction in watering. During the off-season, the plant can winter on window sills..

Ampel geranium is an incredibly beautiful plant that, with proper care, can become a real addition to the interior and delight with cascades of curly flowers not only during the flowering period, but also in winter. It does not require special care and is easy enough to maintain, which is why it is in demand among gardeners in many countries.
