Question: how do I manage the composter?
Hi, I have just finished to appreciate the composting video and I have a doubt that I am going around you: you can gradually add other rubbish, leaves and earth to the edge of the composter or this operation must be at the beginning and once closed the compost bin must be reopened after 5 months ????
Answer: how to fill the composter
generally we continue to add material to the composter, until it is full; only when it is full to the brim does it stop adding material to compost, even though in general the development of the compost produces a noticeable drop in the volume of the composted products, and therefore the compost is periodically replenished by adding other material. Only after a few months it is possible to open the composter from below, and take the compost ready to use. So in effect the material at the bottom of the compost is not touched for months and months, even when you open the compost from above and add more material. Sometimes it happens that you have to turn part of the compost with a pitchfork or a spade, in this case, if you reach the base of the pile, it is advisable to "reset" everything, and then start again to count the months of waiting to then use the ready compost; but this event rarely happens, and generally, even in the case in which the compost has to be stirred, it is not always necessary to do so involving all the material, including the material found on the bottom of the composter.
I remind you that it is quite simple to prepare good compost, but it is good to have some simple rules in mind; the first of all consists in avoiding accumulating in the compost only a product, or even a single product in large quantities and traces of other products.
An example for all, which often made my father despair, who for years continued undaunted to put all the grass resulting from the mowing of 1000 square meters of lawn into compost: the result was always a foul smelling of rotten grass.
Using large amounts of lawn mowing or pruning sticks often leads to the "death" of compost, which is suddenly too humid, too much cellulose, too; when we put the various scraps in the composter we try to alternate green products with scraps of paper, the remains of the cleaning of the potted vegetables of the geraniums of last year; in short, we often alternate remains of various kinds, so as to allow the compost to enrich itself with different materials.
To give a little help, we periodically add the appropriate bacteria for composting, which are easily found even in the supermarket, and if our compost in the summer should be excessively dry, we do not hesitate to water it.
If instead in spring the compost is too wet, because like my father we find ourselves with a lot of grass to dispose of, we mix sawdust, or the exhausted soil of the pots, or other dry material, which will balance the water contained in the grass.
The compost bin is used to break down solid waste as quickly as possible, which is why they are in great demand in gardening stores. They can be made in any shape and capacity, which is why they are used in most gardens. Of course the gardens are larger, and the compost bin must be larger because as a logical consequence, a very large field produces a great deal of waste and therefore the composter must be large to cover and contain all the substances. You can buy them in the many shops specializing in the sale of gardening items or on the many internet sites that treat the issue of gardening tools with great care and attention.
